Development of the Water Information Directory

General

The Water Information Directory is hosted by the New Zealand Hydrological Society . The NZHS represents a wide cross-section of people involved in the hydrological sciences. Internal consultation with society members indicated strong support for the project. Representatives of the Limnological Society of New Zealand also expressed similar support.

The WID project was initiated by two main groups: the Regional Groundwater Forum (RGF) and the Surface Water Information Group (SWIG) who comprise representatives from Local Government organisations involved in water resource management throughout New Zealand.

All Regional Councils and Territorial Authorities involved in the two initiating groups (RGF and SWIG) were canvassed for financial and in-kind support for the project. A similar request for support was also extended to other organisations involved in groundwater or surface freshwater research, monitoring or management including Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) and research organisations.

How is the Water Information Directory funded?

The Water Information Directory was set up with funding by the Ministry for the Environment through their Sustainable Management Fund (SMF) along with funding and/or in-kind support from a number of regional and territorial councils.  The New Zealand Hydrological Society is now responsible for maintenance of the site.
